Dry Bilges aboard a 36' Gilliken Sportfish: stagnant water in the rudder room becomes a thing of the past
The poorly vented rudder room on most sportfish yachts creates the perfect environment for corrosion and aging. During the day while the sun beats down on the floor of the cockpit, air temperatures under the floor can often reach 120 degrees fahrenheit. That small amount of bilge water is continuously evaporating into the limited air space. As the compartment cools late in the day, dewpoint is passed and condensation forms on everything. Mildew, rust, oxidation, bilge slime and rapid aging is the result.
